  17.      I would like to apply the considerable experience I have had
  18.      in  professional  society and conference management to ISOC.
  19.      My interest in professional societies  started  when  as  an
  20.      undergraduate  I  became president of the student chapter of
  21.      the American Association of  Electrical  Engineers.  It  has
  22.      continued ever since as detailed below.

  24.      The  reason for my interest and willingness to serve was has
  25.      been well stated by Francis Bacon in the preface to "The El-
  26.      ements of the Common Lavves of England" published in 1636.

  28.           I hold everyman a debtor to his  profession,  from  the
  29.           which  as  men of course do seek to receive countenance
  30.           and profit, so ought they of duty  to  endeavour  them-
  31.           selves  by  way  of  amends  to  be a help and ornament
  32.           thereunto.

  34.      My specific interest in Internet began  about  8  years  ago
  35.      when  I was working in a staff position whose mission it was
  36.      to promote technical vitality. It seemed  to  me  then  that
  37.      technical  insularity  was the status quo in the development
  38.      laboratories of my employer.  As they say, the rest is  his-
  39.      tory. In May of 1990 I opened up an Internet gateway for all
  40.      employees  of  my corporation. The growth of the gateway has
  41.      been spectacular. At this writing, December  1992,  we  have
  42.      over 21,000 users and the growth rate continues at over 1200
  43.      new  users  per month. The widespread use of the Internet in
  44.      my corporation has led to profound changes in the culture. A
  45.      paper on this topic was presented at INET '92 in Kobe.

  47.      When ISOC was formed, I signed up my company  as  a  charter
  48.      member.  ISOC  is  now recognized by my firm as an "official
  49.      society" which means that our business units  may  reimburse
  50.      employees for membership dues.
  51.  
  52.      I  have  had over 40 years of experience in the computer in-
  53.      dustry with IBM. A significant portion of my work experience
  54.      has been in the communications field. One of my  major  con-
  55.      tributions to the field resulted in the basic patent for au-
  56.      tomatic  equalization  of  modems.   For a number of years I
  57.      chaired the Data  Communications  Interdivisional  Technical
  58.      Liaison Committee within IBM.
